Best Intermediate Pickleball Paddles: 8 Picks Compared

The short answer

The Bread & Butter Loco Elongated is the power-leaning pick Pickleheads recommends to intermediates stepping up, the Vatic Pro Prism Flash is the hybrid Pickleball Effect calls the most control-first paddle on its control list, and the Six Zero Coral Widebody is the balanced all-court option.

Our verdict

Our Top Picks

“Intermediate” is a loose label. Pickleheads writes that “opinions differ on when you’ve reached intermediate level”, bestpicklepad frames its intermediate guide around the 3.0 to 4.0 game, and The Kitchen Pickle talks about the 3.5 to 4.0+ level. This guide covers eight paddles stocked on Amazon that a named tester or the maker puts in front of intermediate players, with each recommendation quoted in the scope its author gave it and dated, and with the USA Pickleball approval status we found for each model.

Coming from a first paddle, you are choosing between plush control, balanced all-court designs and power-leaning builds. For the all-round list across every level see our best pickleball paddles; if you are still earlier in the game, see the best beginner pickleball paddles and the best budget pickleball paddles. Touring-pro paddles are in the best pro pickleball paddle guide.

Every row is the exact variant we link. Core and weight lead the spec columns; the figures are the makers’ own unless a source is named. “USA Pickleball” is what the approved-paddle list showed when we searched on 2026-10-22, with the date the entry was added. The column matters here: two of the eight paddles are not on that list under their own names, and the notes say what each maker states instead.

What intermediate players are told to look for

This is the evidence behind the lineup: what three intermediate-focused guides say, and what Reddit owners report. Pickleheads, bestpicklepad and The Kitchen Pickle earn affiliate commissions or sell paddles, which the reviews note where it applies.

  • Pickleheads (intermediate guide, “May 2026” update) says the Loco “has taken the top spot in this update” as the “overall best intermediate paddle in 2026”, and lists the V-Sol Pro and the Vapor Power 2 among the paddles it added in that update. It does not name a shape for the Loco’s top spot.
  • bestpicklepad (published October 16, 2026) lists seven paddles for “intermediate players”; three of ours appear there, the Hyperion CFS 16mm, the Prism Flash and the CRBN 3X 16mm. It says its picks “support the 3.0–4.0 game”.
  • The Kitchen Pickle (a paddle retailer; July 31, 2026) recommends “a good middle ground between power and control” for intermediate players and lists ten paddles, including the Coral and the GBX Power Hybrid.
  • Matt’s Pickleball titles its guide “The Best for 3.0 to 3.5 Players”, but its paddle list did not load for our readers, so nothing in this guide rests on it.

Our lineup is the paddles from those guides that Amazon sold new, in stock, at or below the maker’s price on 2026-10-22. Several paddles the guides recommend, including the Honolulu J2NF and J6CR, the Luzz Glider and the Proton Peacock, did not turn up in our Amazon searches, and others were dropped for price, identity or stock reasons given in the next section.

How we chose these paddles for intermediates

How this guide was built

built from manufacturer spec pages, the USA Pickleball approved-paddle list, published reviews by Pickleheads, bestpicklepad, Pickleball Effect, Pickleball Studio, John Kew Pickleball and The Kitchen Pickle, and Reddit owner reports; we have not tested these paddles ourselves.

What a paddle had to show

  • An intermediate recommendation in the source’s own words. A named tester or the maker had to put the paddle in front of intermediate players, quoted with the scope the source gave it. Where a source lists a paddle without saying why, the review says so. Skill-level numbers (3.0, 3.5, 4.0) appear only as a source states them.
  • Stocked on Amazon. Each pick is a New offer in stock on Amazon, at or below the maker’s list price, from the seller named in its review. The Holbrook Fuze, which Pickleheads recommends, was not used: Amazon’s Fuze listing did not match Holbrook’s current page, with a higher price and a different product name (the page sells the Fuze VantaGrit). The Friday Aura listings were priced above Friday’s own page, and the Amazon listing for the Six Zero Double Black Diamond 16mm was not shown as in stock. bestpicklepad’s Selkirk Vanguard S2 was not used: the Vanguard Hybrid variant it links was unavailable on Amazon, and Selkirk’s own site no longer lists the Vanguard Hybrid, so there was no maker price to check. The Kitchen Pickle’s 11SIX24 Vapor Jelly Bean was not used either: Amazon’s product data feed does not serve its listing, so it would show no price or image here.
  • The exact variant. The linked thickness, shape and model match what the source names wherever possible; where they do not, the review says what differs.
  • A checkable approval status. We searched the USA Pickleball list by brand and model on 2026-10-22 and report what it showed, including when the entry was added.
  • Distinct roles. One brand appears twice, Vatic Pro, each time with a different construction and a different source behind it. The Loco is sold on Amazon by Selkirk Sport, which owns Bread & Butter; no Selkirk-branded paddle is in the lineup.
Where the figures come from and what Reddit owners say

Where the figures come from

Weights, dimensions and core thickness are the makers’ own figures for the linked variant; a tester’s or retailer’s figure is used only where the maker publishes none, and is labelled. Pickleheads scores paddles out of 10 on power, control, spin and forgiveness; those scores are its own judgements and do not transfer to other testers. Pickleball Effect and Pickleball Studio measure swing weight and spin; John Kew Pickleball uses a lab process it describes. The Kitchen Pickle sells paddles, so its recommendations are labelled retailer reviews, not independent tests. The Loco review notes that Bread & Butter sent John Kew its test paddles.

What Reddit owners say

Reddit threads are single owners and are labelled as such. In an r/Pickleball thread titled “Best paddle for an intermediate player? DUPR ~ 3.5 – 4” (posted November 10, 2023), one commenter wrote: “Vatic pro v7. I was using the prism flash at 3.0 but even with lead tape it didn’t have enough power for the 3.5-4 levels”. In a May 12, 2024 thread, “Best all around paddle for casual/intermediate players?”, one commenter answered: “Get one with carbon Fiber face to grip the ball. Vatic Pro, 11six24, 6.0 DBD”. Neither comment is a test, and neither names a variant beyond what is quoted.

Bread & Butter Loco Elongated 16mm

Intermediate players who want power and reach from a foam paddle and are happy to spend time dialing in the pop.

$149.25 from AmazonAs of Oct 23, 16:57 UTC

Verdict

The paddle Pickleheads puts first on its intermediate list, with its power recommendation tied to the elongated shape and a lab test that found stiffness and a pop that took getting used to.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. John Kew Pickleball: Loco Elongated, Hybrid and Widebody.

Pickleheads’ intermediate guide (May 2026 update) says “Intermediates who are ready to step up to a raw power paddle will love the Bread & Butter Loco.” and, of the shapes, “It comes in Standard and Hybrid shapes but if you want power, grab the Elongated model.” Its scores for the Loco are 9.5 power, 9.5 control, 10 spin and 8.5 forgiveness out of 10. The same paragraph opens “There are no real faults with the B&B Loco – it’s an excellent all-rounder.”, and the guide’s introduction says “Some are more control-oriented, some are made for power, some do it all like the Bread & Butter Loco, my top pick.” So Pickleheads frames the Loco as an all-rounder with the Elongated as its power shape. The guide does not say which shape its scores or its top-spot ranking refer to.

John Kew Pickleball (December 4, 2025), whose paddles were sent by Bread & Butter, tested all three shapes. It wrote that “The elongated had the highest overall power score, with the hybrid close behind” and measured the elongated at 16.46 by 7.40 in with a swing weight of 121.4. Its reviewer described the Loco’s feel as crisp and lively and “stiffer and a bit hollow”, and wrote: “I personally struggled at first with pop control, especially on resets.” That reviewer’s favorite shape was the hybrid. The two sources agree on power and differ on how easy it is to control.

The buy-box seller is Selkirk Sport’s storefront. Selkirk announced on May 12, 2026 that it had acquired Bread & Butter, per its press release. The USA Pickleball list also carries Loco 2 entries (Loco 2 Elongated, added 2026-10-01); we did not find a Loco 2 on Amazon, so the link is the original Loco.

Specs (Bread & Butter Loco Elongated, 16mm, Azul)

  • Core: 16 mm dual-density foam core, EPP and EVA (Bread & Butter)
  • Weight: 8.0-8.2 oz (Bread & Butter)
  • Face: T700 raw carbon fiber with a layer of fiberglass (Bread & Butter)
  • Size: 16.5 x 7.375 in; handle 5.5 in; grip circumference 4.25 in (Bread & Butter)
  • Swingweight 118-120, twistweight 6.28 (Bread & Butter); 121.4 swing weight on John Kew’s test unit
  • Approval: USA Pickleball list, “Loco Elongated 16mm”, added 2025-08-05; Bread & Butter states “USAP approved”

Pros

  • Elongated foam-core build that Pickleheads recommends to intermediates who want power
  • Highest power score of the three shapes in John Kew’s lab test
  • A large, forgiving sweet spot is among what John Kew says the three Loco shapes are best for, though it calls them power-first

Cons

  • Stiff, hollow feel and an initial pop-control adjustment, per John Kew’s reviewer
  • Heaviest swing weight of the three shapes in John Kew’s measurements
  • Pickleheads’ ranking and scores do not name the shape, so they are not a test of this variant

16mm · 8.0-8.3 oz

Intermediate players whose game is built on placement and who do not need USA Pickleball-sanctioned approval.

$209.99 from AmazonAs of Oct 23, 17:44 UTC

Verdict

A hybrid full-foam paddle that Pickleheads calls an excellent fit for intermediates built around control, speed and precision, with the catch that it is UPA-A certified, not on the USA Pickleball list.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Pickleball Studio: Vapor Power2, shape not named on the page.

Pickleheads’ intermediate guide says: “For any intermediate whose game is built around control, speed, and precision, the 11SIX24 Vapor Power 2 is an excellent paddle.” It scores the paddle 8.5 power, 10 control, 9.5 spin and 9 forgiveness out of 10 and describes it as “one of the best control paddles I’ve ever tested”. 11SIX24’s own page says the Power 2 is “built for intermediate to advanced players”.

Pickleball Studio (April 4, 2026) tested the Vapor Power2 for grit longevity and wrote that “The Vapor Power2 makes a big promise on grit longevity with HexGrit, and it actually delivers.” On power, the two testers lean the same way with different emphasis: Pickleheads says “Power is lacking compared to more aggressive paddles”, and Pickleball Studio says drives and serves “felt a little lacking” out of the box but that the issue “goes away” once weight was added. Pickleball Studio calls the sweet spot average. Both describe adding weight as a way to tune it.

Approval is the thing to check. 11SIX24 lists the paddle as UPA-A certified, and Pickleball Studio’s review is headed “The Vapor Power2 is only UPA-A certified”. We found no “Power 2” entry on the USA Pickleball list; the 11SIX24 entries it does carry, such as “Vapor Power 16mm” (added 2025-01-16), are different models.

Specs (11SIX24 Vapor Power 2, hybrid, Teal)

  • Core: 16 mm Gen 4 full-foam floating core (11SIX24)
  • Weight: 8.0-8.3 oz (11SIX24)
  • Face: HexGrit surface (11SIX24)
  • Size: 16.25 x 7.75 in; grip length 5.75 in; grip circumference 4.125 in (11SIX24)
  • Swingweight 108-112, twistweight 6.6-6.8 (11SIX24)
  • Approval: UPA-A certified (11SIX24); no USA Pickleball list entry found for the Power 2

Pros

  • Control-oriented hybrid foam paddle that Pickleheads scores 10 out of 10 for control
  • HexGrit surface that Pickleball Studio measured at 2,141 RPM new and 2,071 RPM after 100 games’ equivalent
  • Light, fast-handling swing in Pickleheads’ words

Cons

  • UPA-A only: not found on the USA Pickleball approved list
  • Power described as lacking by Pickleheads and as a little lacking out of the box by Pickleball Studio
  • Both testers describe adding weight to get more out of it

Vatic Pro V-Sol Pro Flash 16mm

16mm · 8.0 oz average

Intermediate players stepping up from a beginner paddle who want a light foam hybrid and can live with a medium sweet spot.

$109.99 from AmazonAs of Oct 23, 18:52 UTC

Verdict

A foam-core hybrid that Pickleheads recommends to intermediates making the jump from a beginner paddle, with a medium-sized sweet spot as its stated drawback.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Pickleheads: V-Sol Pro Flash (hybrid).

Pickleheads’ intermediate guide says: “If you’re an intermediate who wants a smooth transition from a beginner paddle, this will help you to continue developing your skills without a big investment.” It scores the V-Sol Pro 8.5 power, 9 control, 9.5 spin and 8 forgiveness out of 10, and says “The main drawback is forgiveness, as the sweet spot is medium sized.” The guide names the three models, Bloom, V7 and Flash, without saying which it scored, but Pickleheads’ separate V-Sol Pro review says its tester used “the hybrid-shaped Flash model”, which is the one we link.

Vatic Pro’s page describes a fully foam core with an EVA foam perimeter and lists an average weight of 16mm paddles of 8.0 oz, noting that exact weights are not guaranteed. The page prints no length or width; the Amazon listing, written by the brand, gives the Flash as 16.2 by 7.7 in. The listing’s buy-box seller is Vatic Pro’s own storefront.

Specs (Vatic Pro V-Sol Pro, Flash, standard handle)

  • Core: 16 mm floating EPP core with an EVA perimeter foam ring (Vatic Pro)
  • Weight: 8.0 oz average for 16mm (Vatic Pro; exact weights not guaranteed)
  • Face: raw Toray T700 carbon fiber with heat-compressed texturing (Vatic Pro)
  • Size: 16.2 x 7.7 in (Amazon listing); standard handle 5.3 in; grip circumference 4.125 in (Vatic Pro)
  • Approval: USA Pickleball list, “V-Sol Pro Flash 16mm SH”, added 2025-08-14; Vatic Pro states PBCoR .43 certified

Pros

  • Foam-core feel that Pickleheads says suits touch shots with spin
  • Light weight that Pickleheads calls one of the fastest paddles it has played
  • Listed by USA Pickleball in the standard-handle Flash

Cons

  • Medium-sized sweet spot, per Pickleheads, with off-center hits giving feedback
  • Pickleheads’ intermediate scores do not name the Flash, so the link rests on its separate Flash review
  • Maker page gives no length or width

Vatic Pro Prism Flash 16mm

16mm · Not published

Intermediate players building a soft game who put touch ahead of offense.

$99.99 from AmazonAs of Oct 23, 18:42 UTC

Verdict

The soft, control-first option, named for intermediates by bestpicklepad, with power that two sources say is the thing to give up.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Pickleball Effect: Prism Flash 16mm.

bestpicklepad (updated October 2026) says that “for most intermediate players who need to build their kitchen game first, the Vatic Pro is the smarter starting point” (the Prism Flash is the Vatic Pro on its list), and of the paddle: “What it doesn’t do: power.” Its per-level line for 3.5 players reads: “The Vatic Pro Prism Flash. Real raw carbon spin and a soft touch while your kitchen game develops.” (the 3.5 is bestpicklepad’s own rating wording, not ours).

Pickleball Effect’s control list (updated August 14, 2026) gives the Prism Flash 16mm its “Best Pure Control” place, scores it 10 for control and 3 for power and pop out of 10, and measured 7.91 oz on its unit with a 114 swing weight. It says the Gen 1.5 construction is dated and the raw surface landed in Tier 4 for grit durability. One commenter in the November 2023 r/Pickleball thread quoted above wrote that the Prism Flash “didn’t have enough power for the 3.5-4 levels”; this is a single owner’s report.

Vatic Pro’s page lists the Flash at 16.2 by 7.7 in with a 5.3 in standard handle and does not publish a weight. The buy-box seller is Vatic Pro’s own storefront.

Specs (Vatic Pro Prism Flash, 16mm, standard handle)

  • Core: 16 mm optimized C7 polymer honeycomb with unibody foam-injected walls (Vatic Pro)
  • Weight: not published by the maker; 7.91 oz on Pickleball Effect’s test unit
  • Face: raw Toray T700 carbon fiber with heat-compressed texturing (Vatic Pro)
  • Size: 16.2 x 7.7 in; handle 5.3 in; grip circumference 4.125 in (Vatic Pro); the Amazon listing gives 16.3 x 7.7 in
  • Swingweight 114, twistweight 6.40 (Pickleball Effect’s test unit)
  • Approval: USA Pickleball list, “Prism Flash 16mm”, added 2023-05-20

Pros

  • Soft, control-first response that Pickleball Effect rates 10 out of 10 for control
  • Raw T700 carbon face with the foam-injected walls Vatic Pro describes
  • Listed by USA Pickleball since 2023

Cons

  • Very low power and pop in Pickleball Effect’s scores, and one owner reports it lacked power at 3.5-4
  • Raw surface rated Tier 4 for grit durability by Pickleball Effect
  • No published weight on the maker’s page

Intermediate players ready for an elongated all-court paddle who can handle a head-heavy 8.4 oz swing.

$159.95 from AmazonAs of Oct 23, 16:57 UTC

Verdict

The paddle bestpicklepad says it would tell most people to buy if they had one choice, tested by Pickleball Effect in 2022 as an all-court paddle that leans toward power.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Pickleball Effect: Hyperion CFS 16 (reviewed October 2022).

bestpicklepad calls the Hyperion CFS 16mm “Best All-Court” on its intermediate list and writes: “If the budget allows one paddle, this is what I’d tell most people to buy.” It also says: “In sessions where I handed the Hyperion to 3.5–4.0 players alongside two or three other options, this one produced the most obvious improvement in third-shot drops.” It adds that the feel is “crisp, not plush” and that players from soft beginner paddles “sometimes need a session or two to adjust”.

Pickleball Effect (October 20, 2022) reviewed the Hyperion CFS 16: “The Hyperion CFS 16 is an all-court paddle that leans towards the power side.” It also said the 8.4 oz paddle is head heavy, “which made it feel even heavier than its actual weight”. The sources disagree on shape and weight: bestpicklepad’s spec box lists a hybrid shape and about 8 oz, while JOOLA’s page lists the class as elongated, at 16.5 by 7.5 in with an average weight of 8.4 oz, and Pickleball Effect measured 16.5 by 7.5 in and 8.4 oz. We follow JOOLA’s page. JOOLA’s page describes the paddle for “control-focused players and those advancing to the pro level”, and showed Out Of Stock on joola.com when we read it; the Amazon link is the Crisp Blue colorway sold by Amazon.com.

Specs (JOOLA Hyperion CFS, 16mm, Crisp Blue)

  • Core: 16 mm thermoformed (JOOLA)
  • Weight: 8.4 oz average (JOOLA)
  • Face: carbon friction surface (JOOLA)
  • Size: 16.5 x 7.5 in; grip length 5.5 in; grip circumference 4.25 in, “may vary slightly” (JOOLA)
  • Approval: USA Pickleball list, “Ben Johns Hyperion Carbon Friction Surface 16mm”, added 2022-04-01; JOOLA states “USAP PBCoR .43 certified”

Pros

  • All-court paddle that Pickleball Effect says leans toward power
  • Stable, plush feel with good control, per Pickleball Effect’s pros list
  • Carbon friction surface that bestpicklepad says generates noticeably more spin than standard carbon faces

Cons

  • Head-heavy 8.4 oz that Pickleball Effect found difficult to accelerate on one-handed backhand volleys
  • Crisp, stiffer feel than plush paddles, per bestpicklepad
  • Players coming from soft beginner paddles “sometimes need a session or two to adjust”, per bestpicklepad

Who should buy it

16mm · 8.0-8.3 oz

Intermediate players who want forgiveness and a wide face from a foam all-court paddle.

$200.00 from AmazonAs of Oct 23, 18:52 UTC

Verdict

A balanced foam paddle that The Kitchen Pickle lists for intermediates and that Pickleball Effect says is strongest in its widebody and hybrid shapes.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. Pickleball Effect: Coral 16 mm in all three shapes, widebody included.

The Kitchen Pickle, a paddle retailer, lists the Coral in its intermediate guide (July 31, 2026) and writes: “It’s a great fit for a wide range of players because it strikes a good balance between power and control.” It does not name a shape. Pickleball Effect (November 27, 2025) tested all three shapes and said: “The hybrid and widebody shapes stand out the most, offering the best combination of stability and forgiveness.” It measured the widebody’s swing weight at 108 and twist weight at 7.33, and called the elongated “the only shape that feels a bit out of step”, so we link the widebody. Six Zero’s page, by contrast, says the elongated has “a true 16.5 inch standard elongated length”.

The Amazon listing for this ASIN quotes the hybrid’s figures (6.7 twist weight, 114 swing weight, 5.5 in handle). We use Six Zero’s own widebody table; the two disagree. Six Zero’s page says the Coral is built for “players of all levels” and the widebody is “for maximum forgiveness and stability”. The buy-box seller is Six Zero US’s storefront, and stock was low when we checked.

Specs (Six Zero Coral Widebody, 16mm, Ocean Blue)

  • Core: 16 mm Tectonic Core with ProPulsion foam (Six Zero)
  • Weight: 8.0 – 8.3 oz (Six Zero)
  • Face: Diamond Tough raw carbon fiber (Six Zero)
  • Size: 16 x 7.8 – 8 in; handle 5.5 in; grip circumference 4.0 – 4.13 in (Six Zero)
  • Swingweight 110, twistweight 7.1 (Six Zero); 108 and 7.33 on Pickleball Effect’s test unit
  • Approval: USA Pickleball list, “Coral RCD-W 16MM”, added 2025-11-07; Six Zero lists USA Pickleball as its approval body

Pros

  • Balanced foam paddle in a widebody shape that Pickleball Effect says combines stability and forgiveness
  • High twist weight in Six Zero’s table for out-of-the-box stability
  • Listed by USA Pickleball in the widebody shape

Cons

  • Amazon listing quotes the hybrid’s figures, which differ from Six Zero’s widebody table

Gearbox GBX Power Hybrid 16mm

Verdict

A Gen-3 honeycomb hybrid that The Kitchen Pickle lists for players moving up to 4.0+, with no independent test we could read and no matching USA Pickleball list entry.

Evidence: Retailer review (sells it), not independent. The Kitchen Pickle (sells paddles): GBX Power Hybrid.

The Kitchen Pickle (July 31, 2026) writes: “As the name suggests, the Gearbox GBX Power Hybrid offers good power on aggressive shots like overheads and third-shot drives, but it’s also a very forgiving and stable paddle.” It adds that this “is well-suited to players who are moving up to the 4.0+ level and want a paddle that can grow with their game”. Matt’s Pickleball has a GBX Power Hybrid review, but its site refused our readers. On r/Pickleball, a commenter on an April 2026 owner post wrote that the paddle is “all court” at best: “Good spin, good pop and control, but low on power especially on serves and drives.” That is one owner’s comment, on a post by a self-described 4.66 DUPR player.

Gearbox’s page says the paddle is “USAPA Approved” and “PBCoR Approved”. The USA Pickleball list showed “GBX Power Elongated 16mm” (added 2025-10-15) and “GBX Hybrid 16mm” (added 2025-12-05), and no entry named GBX Power Hybrid. Gearbox does not say whether the GBX Hybrid 16mm entry is this paddle, so check before sanctioned play. The buy-box seller is Gearbox’s own storefront.

Specs (Gearbox GBX Power Hybrid, 16mm)

  • Core: Gen-3 suspended PPE honeycomb core, 16 mm (Gearbox)
  • Weight: 8.0 oz (Gearbox)
  • Face: raw unidirectional carbon fiber (Gearbox)
  • Size: 16.2 x 7.8 in; handle 5.5 in; grip circumference 4 in (Gearbox)
  • Approval: Gearbox states “USAPA Approved”; no list entry found under the GBX Power Hybrid name

Pros

  • Honeycomb hybrid that The Kitchen Pickle calls forgiving and stable, with good power on aggressive shots
  • Hybrid footprint with a wider sweet spot, per Gearbox
  • Raw unidirectional carbon face for spin, per Gearbox

Cons

  • Retailer recommendation only: no independent test of this paddle
  • One owner commenter finds it low on power on serves and drives
  • No USA Pickleball list entry found under this exact name

Intermediate players who play often, swing aggressively and want an elongated paddle whose grit lasts; bestpicklepad says it is more paddle than a 3.0 to 3.5 player still developing fundamentals needs, and to skip it while still developing touch.

Verdict

The elongated paddle bestpicklepad keeps on its intermediate list for players who wear out a paddle’s grit, with its own warning that it is more paddle than a player still developing touch needs.

Evidence: Independently reviewed, exact model. bestpicklepad: CRBN 3X 16mm (bought at retail; intermediate guide, updated October 2026).

bestpicklepad (updated October 2026) labels the CRBN 3X 16mm “Best Spin Longevity” among the seven paddles in its intermediate guide, and its situation list reads: “High-volume player who wants multi-season durability: CRBN 3X. Only makes sense if you’re playing often enough to actually wear out a paddle’s grit.” Its tester writes: “The CRBN 3X held onto most of its original spin through my longest testing window — the unidirectional carbon weave resists smoothing better than standard carbon faces.” It scores the paddle 9.6 out of 10 for power and 8.4 for control.

The same guide limits that recommendation. For 3.0 players it says “The CRBN 3X is more paddle than you need yet.”, the review adds “For a 3.0–3.5 player still developing fundamentals, it’s more paddle than you need right now.”, and its card says “Skip if you’re still developing touch — the 3X rewards aggressive play.” CRBN’s own page opens: “Introducing the CRBN Pickleball X Series: the perfect tool for elite players looking for more power.” The tester and the maker therefore differ on who it is for, and Amazon’s variant selector adds a third reading by labelling the 16mm “Best for Control”.

The sources also differ on construction details. bestpicklepad’s spec box lists a 16mm thermoformed unibody and a unidirectional carbon weave face; CRBN’s page names a T700 Toray carbon fiber surface, a unibody build and a foam-reinforced perimeter, and does not name the core material. CRBN’s page gives a 4.125 in grip circumference; the Amazon listing’s bullets give 4.25 in. The Amazon listing’s UPC matches CRBN’s barcode for the 16mm. The buy-box seller is CRBN Pickleball’s own storefront.

Specs (CRBN 3X, 16mm)

  • Core: 16 mm with a foam-reinforced perimeter; core material not published (CRBN); bestpicklepad lists it as thermoformed
  • Weight: 7.8-8.1 oz (CRBN; its page calls the figures “averages and approximations”)
  • Face: T700 Toray carbon fiber surface (CRBN); bestpicklepad describes a unidirectional carbon weave
  • Size: 16.5 x 7.5 in; handle 5.25 in; grip circumference 4.125 in (CRBN); the Amazon listing gives 4.25 in
  • Approval: USA Pickleball list, “3X 16MM”, added 2023-02-08

Pros

  • Held most of its original spin through bestpicklepad’s longest testing window
  • Unibody construction with carbon fiber running from the face through the handle, per CRBN and bestpicklepad
  • 9.6 out of 10 for power in bestpicklepad’s scores

Cons

  • More paddle than a 3.0-3.5 player still developing fundamentals needs, per bestpicklepad
  • Elongated shape that bestpicklepad says gives more reach but punishes mishits harder than a hybrid
  • Sources differ on grip circumference and on who it suits (tester, maker and Amazon’s variant label)

Which paddle for which intermediate player

If you play a soft, placement game

The Prism Flash and the Vapor Power 2 are the two the sources place on the control side: Pickleball Effect scores the Prism Flash 10 out of 10 for control, and Pickleheads scores the Vapor Power 2 10 out of 10. The Vapor Power 2 is not on the USA Pickleball list.

If you want an all-rounder

The Coral Widebody, the Hyperion CFS and the GBX Power Hybrid are the all-court picks. They differ in shape (widebody, elongated, hybrid) and in how well they are documented: the Coral and Hyperion each have an independent test, while the GBX rests on a retailer’s recommendation. At the entry tier, Pickleheads describes the V-Sol Pro this way: “You’re getting elite spin, speed, and control, with plenty of pop when you need it.” Pickleheads also calls the Loco an excellent all-rounder (see the Loco review).

If you want more power

The Loco Elongated is the shape Pickleheads points intermediates to for power. The CRBN 3X is the other power-leaning pick: bestpicklepad scores it 9.6 out of 10 for power and CRBN pitches the X Series at elite players looking for more power, but bestpicklepad also says “Skip if you’re still developing touch — the 3X rewards aggressive play.”

If you play sanctioned events

Check approval for your exact model. Of the eight, the Loco, V-Sol Pro, Prism Flash, Hyperion CFS, Coral and CRBN 3X are on the USA Pickleball list under their own names; the Vapor Power 2 and GBX Power Hybrid are not found by name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the best pickleball paddle for an intermediate player?

There is no single answer in the sources. Pickleheads’ May 2026 update puts the Bread & Butter Loco first among its intermediate paddles, bestpicklepad says that if the budget allows one paddle, the JOOLA Hyperion CFS 16mm is what it would tell most people to buy, and The Kitchen Pickle recommends “a good middle ground between power and control”. Match the shape, weight and approval to your own game using the table above.

Q. What is considered an intermediate player in pickleball?

Sources draw it differently. Pickleheads says “opinions differ”, bestpicklepad’s guide supports “the 3.0–4.0 game”, The Kitchen Pickle describes “the 3.5-4.0+ level”, and Matt’s Pickleball titles its guide “The Best for 3.0 to 3.5 Players”. We use each number only as the source gave it.

Q. What is the best intermediate pickleball paddle on Reddit?

Reddit threads give single-owner opinions, not a consensus. In the November 2023 thread on a 3.5-4 player’s upgrade, one commenter recommended a Vatic Pro V7 over the Prism Flash for power; in a May 2024 thread, one commenter listed Vatic Pro, 11six24 and Six Zero’s DBD. Treat them as individual reports.

Q. What is a good paddle for a 3.0 or 3.5 player?

bestpicklepad’s own recommendation for 3.5 players is the Vatic Pro Prism Flash, and it starts 3.0 players on the same paddle (plus a Selkirk option we did not use), adding that “The CRBN 3X is more paddle than you need yet.” Those are its ratings, not ours; the Prism Flash is review 4 above and the CRBN 3X is review 8.

Q. Should an intermediate player choose a 14mm or 16mm paddle?

All eight picks are 16mm. For the trade-off, see our 14mm vs 16mm pickleball paddle guide.

Q. How much should an intermediate paddle weigh, and what grip size?

The makers’ weights in our picks run from 7.8 to 8.4 oz, and grip circumferences from 4 to 4.25 in. For how weight and grip size are chosen, see our pickleball paddle weight and pickleball grip size guides.

Q. Is an intermediate paddle different from a beginner or pro paddle?

These picks sit between the guides above: our beginner and budget guides cover entry-level options, and the pro paddle guide covers touring-pro choices. Some paddles appear in more than one guide only where a source names them for that level.

The bottom line

Final Verdict

If you want the paddle Pickleheads puts first for intermediates, it is the Bread & Butter Loco Elongated (check price), with the caveat that its ranking does not name a shape and John Kew’s reviewer found the pop took getting used to. For a soft, control-first start, the Vatic Pro Prism Flash (check price) is the one two testers and an owner describe as short on power, and the V-Sol Pro Flash (check price) is the foam hybrid Pickleheads recommends for the step up. The Six Zero Coral Widebody (check price), the JOOLA Hyperion CFS (check price) and the Gearbox GBX Power Hybrid (check price) are the all-court options. The 11SIX24 Vapor Power 2 (check price) is the premium control option, limited to UPA-A play, and the CRBN 3X (check price) is the power-leaning paddle bestpicklepad keeps for intermediates who play often, not for players still developing touch.

Check the approved list for your exact model before a sanctioned event, and treat each recommendation as the scope its source gave it.
